Our relationship with sex isn’t exclusively sexual. Our sexuality is also tied to political, economic, cultural, and religious beliefs. Throughout history, there have been many different perceptions of sex work, inspiring varied views on sex-related activities. So why have we adopted a Christian perspective?

Despite a constitution that is widely believed to be among the world’s most liberal and comprehensive in terms of human rights, sex work is fully criminalised in South Africa. This means that if a sex worker is mistreated in any way on the job, they themselves will be penalised for reporting the incident, because they have admitted to participating in an illegal profession. Decriminalising sex work solves problems for society’s vulnerable, but can cause further issues if not done thoughtfully. For SA sex workers, it’s more important now than ever.

Sex work is not something we would typically assume our favourite high school teacher engaged in — the contrast is stark. But Cohen* (27) has found an overlap in these two occupations, drawing on his experiences to teach sex education and spread love amongst learners. They speak to us about the challenges they’ve faced in their own life and career, their desire to help the youth, why they do what they do, and raising their own children.
